SCM portal project: digitalization of the supply chain at ÖBB-TS
The SCM portal at the Austrian Federal Railways ÖBB supports the ordering and transportation processes. A management portal provides the ÖBB-TS team with maximum process transparency.

ÖSTERREICHISCHE BUNDESBAHN “Technical Services” manages around 35,000 rail vehicles, 15,000 vehicle components and 150,000 customer orders annually with 4,000 employees at 22 locations.
The SCM portal is based on the “SC-Manager” software solution from Simmeth System, which is optimally adapted to ÖBB TS processes and seamlessly integrated into the existing IT infrastructure.
1. objectives:
The aim of digitizing the ÖBB TS supply chain with the SCM portal is
- standardization of communication and data exchange with suppliers,
- increased transparency in the material flow and
- leaner processes.
2. integration:
The SCM portal supports the ordering and transport processes with a supplier portal and ensures maximum process transparency for the ÖBB TS team with an internal management portal. The SCM portal serves the supplier as an access point for the exchange of logistical and planning data and documents with ÖBB TS. Information on the material flow is exchanged digitally.
The SCM portal accesses data from both the connected IT systems of ÖBB TS and the suppliers and supplements them with
- a set of rules and controls for monitoring workflows,
- Data streams and
- Information.
The ÖBB TS SCM team monitors the processes in “real time” and is warned of any deviations. The SCM portal is a platform for the following processes and activities:
- It transfers ÖBB TS orders, including all associated information, to the suppliers and informs them automatically.
- Suppliers process order confirmations, shipping notifications and shipments directly in their SCM Portals account.
- They can enter all the necessary information and upload documents via simple, intuitive web clients or have the data automatically transferred from their systems via an interface, known as EDI. The SCM portal also complies with the global GS1 standards.
ÖBB TS SCM has a central overview of all processes via its digital “SC Manager”. Warning functions draw attention to critical processes, while key figures and corresponding reports provide information in real time. ÖBB TS specialists can monitor and analyze their processes in detail via interactive dashboards. Integrated obsolescence management also digitalizes and optimizes this important area of the supply chain.
3. successes: What have we achieved?
- With just one platform, seamless tracking of materials is guaranteed.
- The SCM portal enables the simple exchange of documents and
- creates a transparent atmosphere between all those involved in the process.
The sum of these target components ultimately leads to a considerable reduction in costs for everyone involved in the supply chain.
