Supplier evaluation at NuernbergMesse

  • Success Story

Where once time-intensive an Excel questionnaire had to be completed and the data had to be painstakingly evaluated, a few clicks are enough today. How NürnbergMesse, the trade fair of Nuremberg has implemented this with the solutions of Simmeth System GmbH can be read in the following Success Story.

Construction work has been going on at the NürnbergMesse trade fair site in Nuremberg for more than a year: craftsmen, workers and engineers have been in action since August 2012, and the 37 million euro new hall is to be completed in just 18 months. The project is then completed for the 25 companies involved in the construction; however, the relationship with the NürnbergMesse Group remains.

"We want to further develop the partnership relationships with our suppliers, systematically assess and optimize their performance," emphasizes Heiko Menn, Senior Manager Central Purchasing. "After completion of the construction phase, all participating suppliers will be evaluated on a construction site-related basis."

The software specialists at Simmeth System GmbH have introduced the innovative rating system over the past three years. "After all, we have an annual purchasing volume of around 90 million euros," explains Rainer Großl, Head of Central Purchasing. "Money that should be used in the best possible way."

236 users rate the top 100 suppliers

At present, a total of 236 users have access to the software, the so-called "Supply Monitor", where the responsible departments of NürnbergMesse regularly rate their top 100 suppliers. Up to now, three product groups have been included in supplier management: These include facility management with services such as cleaning and heating construction, service partners such as Stand builders as well as the marketing services.
"The comprehensive evaluation system provides us with current evaluations at the push of a button, so that we can always draw valuable conclusions about the performance of our suppliers," explains project manager Heiko Menn. Improvement measures as well as common goals are then agreed in annual development discussions.
Suppliers want to know how they are positioned in competition

"The feedback from our valued suppliers is consistently positive: they want to be informed about their rating and benefit from comparative data that shows them how they are positioned in the competitive environment," says Menn.
The high level of acceptance is also evident from the commentary function, which the evaluators have been increasingly using since the launch of the new platform. "Today, about 25 percent of reviews contain verbose comments, which is a huge increase compared to the previous three percent," says Menn.
Where once time-intensive an Excel questionnaire had to be completed and the data had to be painstakingly evaluated, a few clicks are enough today: the departments receive an invitation mail, log in and rate their partners. You profit from the ease of use, the purchasing from the automatic and self-explanatory evaluation of the results.
Evaluations become more precise, processes faster

The system is characterized by the combination of modern web technology with a flexible software architecture: "Processes become faster, assessments more precise." The software modules are tailored precisely to the needs of NürnbergMesse, "explains Markus Simmeth, whose Simmeth System GmbH is based in the German-speaking region Room is playing a pioneering role with its supplier management.
Heiko Menn says: "If we have ideas on how to improve the system, for example, we will be able to implement it quickly and flexibly - without causing huge costs." In the future, buyers want to include further product groups in the evaluation and focus more on the development of their suppliers and distribution partners, who are active in around 100 countries.
After all, NürnbergMesse realizes 120 national and international trade fairs and congresses each year with 30,000 exhibitors and up to 1.4 million visitors. The International Toy Fair is scheduled to take place in February 2014 in the new hall. According to the plans of the renowned London architectural office "Zaha Hadid Architects", the new exhibition hall 3A offers 9,000 square meters and optimized energy efficiency. Then the area with a total of 170,000 square meters is almost as big as the fairs Stuttgart and Hamburg together.
